Jeux vidéo indépendants [Mac, PC, iPhone]

C’est pas parce que je déserte mon blog en ce moment que je ne vais pas poster au moins une fois par mois comme je l’ai toujours fait ! On se débarrasse pas de moi aussi facilement.

Dans une semaine nous emménageons dans notre nouvel appart à Valence et je rejoins officiellement la grande tribu des télétravailleurs (qui ne consiste pas -que- à travailler devant sa télé).

Ca fait deux mois que j’ai laissé Christophe bosser tout seul sur nos projets iPhone. Je vais m’y remettre d’ici mi-octobre, ma motivation remonte peu à peu… l’air de rien c’est nécessaire de faire de grandes pauses de temps en temps pour recharger les batteries.

Aller hop, un petit [vrac] comme au bon vieux temps.

J’ai bien du mal à actualiser ce blog en ce moment. Il faut que Twitter est bien moins consommateur de temps pour dire des bêtises de temps en temps…

Avant d’aller plus loin je voulais vous demander si certains d’entre vous ont des infos à me donner sur Valence et Romans-sur-Isère. Ma chérie va aller faire son internat sur la région de Lyon donc nous voilà sur le point de déménager vers Valence (vive le télétravail). Quels sont les quartiers à éviter ? La Game Developer Conference lieu en ce moment, voilà quelques articles intéressants sur le développement de jeux indépendants.

Blurst explique comment ils travaillent et quels sont les clefs de leur réussite dans le prototyping de jeux.

The team tried working from 10am to 3:15pm, four days per week, on a number of those 8-week games. They found it actually worked fairly well in focusing people into doing targeted, specific work.

Wegner and Swink particularly suggested using ’single-tasking’ to really concentrate on one task for a limited amount of time, such as 48 minutes, which is “short enough that you can guilt yourself into it”, concluding that smart process can really make your game projects efficient and different.

Ron Carmel de 2D Boy (World of Goo) insite les développeurs à mieux considérer le travail qu’il reste à faire une fois un jeu sorti.

In 2D Boy’s case, a WiiWare email promotion from Nintendo sold 25,000 copies of the game, a Steam 75% off sale helped push 42,000 copies in one weekend, and the MacHeist 3 promotion helped sell 88,000 copies in 2 weeks. Many of these were at much lower sales prices, but it all adds up.

C’est à mon avis la deuxième chose la plus importe et la plus négligée par les développeurs indépendants (après la communication). De notre côté je pense qu’on a plutôt bien fait notre trvail pour Penguins Arena (plusieurs grosses màj + comm + Steam + bundles) par contre on a vraiment merdé sur MiniOne Racing où on a pas fait grand chose une fois la sortie du jeu effectuée. C’est aussi une histoire de motivation car après avoir passé plusieurs semaines (voir mois) en crunch-mode c’est pas évident de trouver l’énergie pour bosser à nouveau sur le même jeu.

Voilà plus d’un an que ma chérie prépare son Examen National Classant (ENC), concours d’entrée en internat de médecine. Dans deux semaines nous allons donc nous retrouver à Strasbourg pour les 3/4 jours que durent l’examen (avant d’aller prendre un peu de repos en Belgique puis à Amsterdam).

Autant ma chère et tendre sera bien occupée pendant ces quelques jours autant moi, ma bite, mon couteau et mon Macbook seront libres d’explorer cette belle ville qu’est Strasbourg.

D’où ma question : que faut il ne surtout pas rater à Strasbourg ? Musée, bar, resto, bar, parc, bar…

Voilà bientôt deux semaines qu’on attends la validation de notre jeu iPhone par Apple. Visiblement l’arrivée imminente de l’OS en version 3 a foutu le bronx dans le process des test/validation. En attendant je prototype des idées de petits jeux.

Now the flood gates have been opened, and I am telling you to look out below. Today Reflexive, recently acquired by Amazon, opened their new download store, with lowered front tier pricing of $9.95 and second tier pricing of $6.95 for Indie casual games. All of the other casual portals like Big Fish Games and Yahoo games have pricing of of $6.95 by joining their “clubs”. It is my belief that even these prices will not hold up over time.

As an example of the future, look at the game section of the iPhone App Store. In this market, the right price for a game is $0, and I believe that is where all game prices are heading. For a while, there will be successes at $3.99 to $1, but eventually, I think you will see capitulation to the $0 price point.

You are probably one of the very few indie devs that constantly invest in marketing. What is your marketing budget and where do you advertise?

My marketing budget varies, but its basically about 90% of my day to day costs excluding paying contract artists. I probably get through about £450 a month on Google Adwords, and I advertise a fair few other places too. That really adds up. Over the year, you are talking maybe $10,000 on advertising, maybe more. I advertise in absolutely tons of places, but Google gets the lions share.

I had to click “buy it” links to check out your games prices. Do you think that it helps you sell more games this way?

Possibly. There is some chance that you increase the emotional connection with going through with the purchase by making them click, so they are already closer to a sale once they see the price. I’m not sure about that, because it’s an extra step in the process. I do it because it makes managing price changes and discounts easier.

Cette fois-ci c’est officiel, le Unity Engine 2.5 sort dans quelques semaines.

La grosse nouveauté c’est donc le portage du Unity Editor sur PC. Pour ca ils ont tout simplement réécrit complètement le Unity Editor avec… le Unity Engine (qui lui est cross-platform).

Le Unity a déjà réussi là prouesse de convaincre bon nombre de développeurs indépendants à switcher vers le Mac juste dans le but de pouvoir développer des jeux avec ce moteur. Lorsque la version PC va sortir ca va être la ruée ! A mon avis la communauté va doubler en moins de 3 mois.

Ce sera une mise à jour gratuite pour ceux qui possède déjà la version 2.

Sortie prévue avant la GDC donc avant fin mars

Blurst remet le couvert. Quelques semaines après avoir sorti Minotaur China Shop ils annoncent déjà un nouveau jeu, Blush pour le 1er Mars. Leur secret ? Des cycles de développement très courts (8 semaines) et un moteur de tueurs : le Unity Engine (et oui, encore) !

After Blush, we’d eventually like to do some multiplayer stuff, some expressive build-y kinds of things, and some weirder more concept driven ideas. Really, it will depend on what we’re into when each 8-week cycle spins up. We’re spending two weeks every cycle to prototype ideas, and these prototypes will roll over and mature as time goes on. It’s like collecting minutes on your phone; eventually you can call grandma and read poetry for a solid 20 hours without worrying about the bill. We look forward to it every year. It’s safe to say we’ll be lazy and do a sequel of something sometime, too. Something popular.
